How do we create cities with ready access to tools and manufacturing?


Nina Rappaport and Dieter Leyssen will discuss concepts and projects featured in Hybrid Factory Hybrid City, a collection of essays by renown architects and scholars in Europe working in the field of urban industry and ways to create a remix. The book is based on a symposium convened by Nina Rappaport at the Politecnico di Torino.

Now that industry is often clean, green, small, and quiet it can be integrated in the city at the urban design and building scale with other uses including housing and local community activities. Architects and urbanists are exploring ways to create this new hybrid. With ideas for the future sustainable manufacturing and advanced production, a mix that is open and equitable in cities can be created in new unexplored forms.

Join Nina Rappaport, to discuss her new book, Hybrid Factory Hybrid City with one of its contributors, Dieter Leyssen, who is a partner at 51N4E and in town from Brussels for a lecture he will be giving the night before at the Architectural League.

Bios:

Nina Rappaport is an urbanist, architectural historian, writer, and educator. As director of Vertical Urban Factory, a think tank and consultancy, she focuses on the intersection of production spaces, architecture, and the role of the factory worker. She is the author of Vertical Urban Factory (Actar, 2015; 2nd ed., 2020) and curator of the eponymous traveling exhibition (2011 – ongoing). Rappaport co-edited Design for Urban Manufacturing (Routledge, 2020) and Industrial Palimpsest: Newark, N.J. (Actar, 2012).  She has been Publications Director at the Yale School of Architecture since 1998, a visiting professor at the Politecnico di Torino and is coordinator of the history/theory program at the School of Public Architecture at Kean University where she has just started a Center for Urban Industry in New Jersey. She has taught in New York area schools and has received many grants for her research.

Dieter Leyssen, architect and urban sociologist, is a partner at 51N4E the Brussels based urban design and architecture firm. He holds a masters in architecture from KULeuven and in City Design and Social Sciences from London School of Economics. At 51N4E he is responsible for civic design and adaptive infrastructure projects. He currently teaches at KULeuven and UHasselt.


He will discuss the project Circularium, featured in Hybrid Factory/Hybrid City, a transformation of a former automotive assembly and repair plant of over 20,000 m2 into a center of innovation and circular production in Brussels.
